FCS expands playoffs
Posted 03:07 p.m., April 30, 2008
The odds of The Citadel (and Charleston Southern) making the FCS (Division I-AA) playoffs will get a little bit better -- starting in 2010.
The NCAA decided last week to expand the FCS playoffs from the current 16 teams to 20 teams starting in 2010. Two the four new bids will be for at-large teams; two will go to the champions of the Big South (where CSU is a member) and the Northeast Conference. That makes 10 at-large and 10 automatic bids.
Currently, there are eight automatic bids and eight at-large bids to the FCS playoffs.
Personally, I saw no pressing need to expand the playoffs. But with the new format, 20 of 114 FCS teams will make the playoffs. That's 17.5 percent, compared with 19 percent of D-I basketball teams that make the NCAA Tournament and the ridiculous 53 percent of FBS teams that play in bowl games.
With the new format, the start of the playoffs will move up a week starting in 2010. There will be four first-round games, with 12 teams earning first-round byes.
Will follow up in The Post and Courier with coach Kevin Higgins' thoughts.
