Battery to host Seattle in home opener

Posted 01:58 p.m., April 18, 2008

The Charleston Battery will hold its home opener Saturday night against defending USL First Division champs Seattle at Blackbaud Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

The Sounders have all 11 starters back from last year’s USL First Division championship game, so this should be a real test for the Battery to see where they are in respect to the rest of the league.

The Post and Courier print edition will run the Battery’s season preview in Saturday’s paper. It’ll include the Battery’s schedule and bios on all the players. I also did a feature on striker Randi Patterson. I think he’s got a real shot to get 10-to15 goals this season. He’s a guy that’s hungry to get back to the MLS (he was with the New York Red Bulls last summer), but in a good way. You want young guys that are hungry to play at the next level.

It doesn’t look like Stephen Armstrong or Lazo Alavajana will be available to play Saturday night against Seattle. Both are in town with the MISL season finally over, but Battery coach Mike Anhaeuser wants to give them a few days off to rest their legs.

Also, from all indications Ian Fuller and Chris Corocoran will be out Saturday as well with injuries.

The Battery opened the season with a 2-2 tie against Miami FC on the road. Again, from talking with players and coaches, they felt like it was a good result considering who was not in the lineup ie. … Armstrong and Alavanja.

One of the most pleasant surprises to come out of the Battery’s opener was the performance of rookie midfielder Dominic Cianciarulo, a former Furman standout, who had both goals for Charleston. Unfortunately, Cianciarulo strained his hamstring and might not be available for Saturday’s game.

See you on the Pitch,

APM

any word on how long Fuler and corcoran will be out?

too bad about Cianciarulo He was a pleasant surprise considering he didnt get much time during the preseason.

Im hopeful for Patterson as well. He showed well in the preaseason but didnt get many chance during the Miami match.

Thanks agian and look ofrward to the season preview tomorrow. I thought the Battery might get lost again with tennis and the Stingrays playoff revival.

Mikey,

My understanding is that it might be a couple of weeks on both Ian and Chris.

Hey Andrew,
Love the blog and all the coverage you give the Battery (of course, we'll always bitch for more...that's our job...LOL). Stop over in E10 during a game and say hello.....I'll be the Brad Pitt lookalike standing on the first row.
