MOUNT PLEASANT - There are still 18 holes remaining, but Rigel Fernandes has to like his position heading into Saturday's final round of the 42nd annual Rice Planters Amateur at Snee Farm Country Club.

Despite shooting an even-par 72 Friday, the rising sophomore at the University of South Florida maintained a five-stroke advantage as he tries for a wire-to-wire victory.

Fernandes is a 12-under-par 204. Purdue's Zhongyang Fu (69) and Australian Travis Smyth (67) are tied for second at 209, one stroke in front of James Madison golfer Ryan Cole (72).

The biggest move of the day was by Alabama golfer Dru Love, the son of PGA Tour star Davis Love III who has served as caddy this week. Love posted a 6-under 66 to jump into tie for fifth at 211 with Rhyne Jones of Nevada, Jon Weiss of James Madison and Wofford's Andrew Novak.

"It was a little windier today and a few pins were tucked where you couldn't go at them," said Fernandes, who was born in India, grew up in Dubai and attended the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., said because of the win you couldn't play the yardages.

"I didn't start very well. I didn't find my rhythm until No. 9," Fernandes said.

He said his game plan for the final round is to make aggressive swings on a conservative line.

"Somebody could shoot 65 or 64 out there," he added.

(bullet) Charleston Southern won the Atkinson Cup, a three-round competition by golfers representing their respective schools. The Buccaneers, represented by Will Pieper, Jarrett Swan and Ross Thomson, had a 54-hole cumulative score of 648. Wofford, represented by Jeremy Grab, Brent McKenzie and Andrew Novak, finished second at 653. The Atkinson Cup honors two-time Rice Planters champion Bert Atkinson of Charleston.
