MYRTLE BEACH -- James Island had to go to penalty kicks to do it, but the Trojans upset third-ranked Myrtle Beach High School by 2-1 on Saturday night to advance to the Class AAA Lower State final in the boys soccer playoffs.
The sixth-ranked Trojans (17-3-0) will play host at 7 p.m. Tuesday to No. 2 Brookland-Cayce, a 2-1 winner over Socastee on Saturday. Brookland-Cayce is 23-3-1 this season.
Evan Tanner scored to give James Island an early lead. After Myrtle Beach tied the score and the teams went through 110 minutes of regulation, overtime and sudden death, Trojans freshman keeper Ethan Marshall made saves on Myrtle Beach's first two penalty kicks.
