One person was shot Monday morning in downtown Charleston, the police said.
The shooting was reported about 11:15 a.m. near Congress and Senate streets, according to Charleston Police Department spokesman Charles Francis.
The male victim was taken to Medical University Hospital, Francis said. His condition wasn't known.
Nobody was immediately arrested, Francis added.
The neighborhood is near the interchange of Interstate 26 and U.S. Highway 17. Houses, apartment buildings and a church line the streets.
At the crime scene, investigators placed 14 evidence markers in the street. A bicycle lay near the sidewalk on Senate Street.
Residents reported hearing rapid gunfire at the time of the shooting.
Officers had been looking for a suspect in the area, but Francis assured community members that the streets were safe to walk.
