A desperate Virginia Tech team escaped with an 80-77 win against Clemson at Littlejohn Coliseum on Wednesday night.

Entering on the NCAA bubble, and having lost three straight conference games, Virginia Tech got a combined 47 points from guards Malcolm Delaney and A.D. Vassallo in a rugged game that included 46 total fouls.

Clemson (22-5, 8-5 ACC) had a shot to gain sole possession of second place with a Duke loss Wednesday night. The Tigers and Florida State have both lost this week entering in a three-way tie with Duke for second place in the league.

Clemson had a chance to tie late Wednesday, but Demontez Stitt's 3-point attempt came up short. Clemson shot just 42 percent from the field. The Hokes improve to 17-10, 7-6.
